1. NUMBER OF GRAFTS AND HAIR STRANDS ARE DIFFERENT CONCEPTS IN PRICING
Hair grafts, hair follicles, and hair roots are similar concepts often confused with each other. These concepts are one of the greatest sources of confusion when a patient begins to consult with a doctor about hair transplant surgery.
Transplanting 2500 hair grafts to a patient does not mean that 2500 hair strands have been transplanted in the donor site, because most grafts usually contain more than one hair root.
The term graft used in hair transplant procedures refers to a follicular unit, which is the collection of hairs grouped together in the scalp.
In practice, a follicular unit, or hair graft, is assumed to contain 2 hair strands on average, so when you receive 1500 grafts in hair transplant, that means about 3000 hair strands are transplanted to your recipient site. Patients may sometimes experience a great disappointment after the procedure due to a misunderstanding or hair centers that exploit people’s lack of knowledge.
This technical issue may be exploited by some hair transplant centers. They patients that they need 3000 grafts to cover all their balding areas but in reality they just transplant 1500 grafts and tell the patient he received 3000 new hairs. The patient can naturally assume that he received 3000 grafts, but in reality, they just play with words and use different terms to confuse the patients.
If you know the difference between “graft” and “hair root/strand”, you may avoid any such confusions or overcharging schemes.
2. DO NOT TRUST PEOPLE WHO CALL THEMSELVES HAIR TRANSPLANT SPECIALIST!
There is no such title or certification system or medical branch as hair transplant specialist. Most of the individuals who claim to be hair transplant specialists are those who are not officially licensed to conduct hair transplants and they work at illegally operating hair transplant centers.
If a person in a hair transplant center or on a website uses the title “hair transplant specialist”, you need to know that he or she does not have a legal certification/diploma in this field. Diploma holders refer to themselves as “doctors”, “dermatologists”, “surgeons”.
In order to be able to carry out hair transplant surgery in our country, one must first graduate from a medical faculty and become a physician. However, not all doctors are licensed to perform hair transplants – only dermatologists and plastic surgeons, as well as medical practitioners with a medical aesthetic certificate can perform hair transplant operations.
We regret to say that majority of illegal hair transplant operations are done by unlicensed people at hospitals.
Another point that should be noted here is the term “healthcare professional”. In general, unlicensed people refer to themselves as healthcare professional when you ask about their profession. There is no such profession categorized under law. When you ask real health professionals what they do, they use the titles such as “doctors, specialists, nurses, paramedics, laboratory assistants”. If a person calls himself a healthcare professional, you should know that he received no formal education in healthcare or medicine.
Unfortunately, about 85% of the transplants in our country are carried out by unauthorized persons. Half of these people are not even health professionals (these people are mostly hairdressers, make-up artists, etc.).
These people have not received training about crucial aspects of surgery such as sterilization, tissue handling during the process. Therefore, hair transplant procedures not performed under doctor’s supervision always run a higher risk of failure or infection. It should not be forgotten that hair transplant is a surgical procedure.
People seeking hair transplant surgery are advised to pay attention to whether the center is licensed and the surgery is performed under a medical doctor’s supervision.
3. DO NOT SOLELY RELY ON THE INTERNET WHEN CHOOSING A HAIR TRANSPLANT!
The Internet has been an excellent resource of vital information over recent years. But at the same time, it could be manipulated by some health institutions.
Internet marketing techniques such as fake comments, recommendation sites, phony blogs that are evidently forged to gain popularity are heavily used to attract new customers.
There are, of course, many renowned hair transplant centers that deserve their reputation with their success rates and they strive to raise awareness on hair restoration surgery.
If possible, use direct communication when deciding on your hair transplant center, thinking that the internet is an area that can be manipulated.
When you communicate with people on the phone, you should arrange a face-to-face appointment before the operation. Watch the answers given to your questions, paying attention to how elaborate and detailed the answers are.
Popularity does not always bring quality. We recommend that you pay particular attention to this when your health is at issue.
4. UNSHAVEN HAIR TRANSPLANT CANNOT BE PERFORMED IN EVERY PATIENT!
As is known, hair is completely shaven in the traditional FUE method. The primary purpose of shaving is to collect as many grafts as possible. A successful hair transplant is only possible with an adequate and healthy amount of graft collected from the donor area.
Many people who plan to undergo hair transplant surgery will delay or avoid the procedure as they fear that their head will be shaven before surgery. They just want to avoid questions from their social circle, influenced by the sudden change they will experience in their physical appearance.
This has helped increase the popularity of the hair transplant centers claiming that they are performing hair transplant surgery on unshaven head.
The main advantage of unshaven hair transplant is that the hair can conceal certain side effects such as scars or redness that occur after the surgery. Since the hair is not shaved, there is also the expectation that it will be very difficult for other people to notice any surgery traces.
However, unshaven hair transplant can only prove successful in a limited group of people, and the success rate is often low.
The disadvantages of unshaven hair transplant are as follows:
Additional disadvantages of unshaven hair transplant also include the following: (continued)
Long hair might hinder a thorough washing and the remaining shampoo residue affects the new hair negatively. Folliculitis, hair follicle inflammation, occurs more frequently after unshaven hair transplant surgery. This complication can significantly reduce the success rate of the transplanted hair.
“Advertisements promoting unshaven hair transplants can be deceptive.”
5. ADDITIONAL APPLICATIONS ENHANCE THE SUCCESS OF HAIR TRANSPLANT!
In addition to the use of HypoThermosol biopreservation storage solution during hair transplant, the use of PRP during and after surgery has been proven to increase the success of hair transplant by scientific studies and observations/experiences of many physicians operating in this field.
In general, between 3% and 10% of grafts transplanted during surgery do not grow back. The main reason for this is the low ability of some grafts to adhere to the scalp due to insufficient blood flow in the head. PRP administration avoids this possible loss by accelerating blood flow. On the other hand, thanks to PRP, hair follicles are nourished with minerals and vitamins to allow them to grow back stronger and thicker.
HypoThermosol biopreservation solution is used is used to maximize the viability and durability of cells in tissue and organ transplants. At DK Hair Klinik, we use this special solution to store hair transplant grafts outside of the body, which significantly enhances the quality of hair transplant procedures. The solution prevents the increase of free radicals while grafts outside of the body, minimize pH fluctuations, provides ideal osmotic balance and ionic concentrations for follicle cells, as well as nutrients to stop cell death. Scientific studies on this subject show that the results of hair transplants done in this way are much more efficient.
Although the benefits of applications like PRP and HypoThermasol or hair mesotherapy, are well-established in hair transplant surgery, many centers avoid using them mainly because of their high costs. Besides, they must have a technical team that is experienced and competent in the correct application of these processes.
